Short circuit: identification and emergency repair
A short circuit occurs when two conductors of different polarities make direct contact. This phenomenon causes a sudden surge in current that trips the protective devices. Without prompt intervention, a short circuit can cause a fire.
Signs of a short circuit
- Sudden tripping of the main circuit breaker
- Sparks or visible electric arc
- Burning smell near an outlet, switch or within walls
- Black marks on outlets or switches
- Circuit breaker that trips immediately after being reset

- Damaged cable: wire cut by a nail, screw or rodent
- Degraded insulation: old wiring with cracked sheathing
- Water ingress: infiltration into a junction box or conduit
- Defective appliance: internal short circuit in an item of equipment
