Does your installation lack RCD protection or is your RCD tripping for no apparent reason?

Residual current device (RCD): protecting people from electrocution

A 30 mA RCD is the safety device that protects people against the risk of electrocution. It detects leakage currents and instantly cuts the power supply. Its installation is mandatory under the NFC 15-100 standard.

Why is an RCD indispensable?

A leakage current of just 30 milliamps can be fatal. The RCD detects this leakage and cuts the circuit in less than 40 milliseconds, before the current can cause bodily harm.

Types of RCD

  • Type AC: detects alternating leakage currents. Suitable for most circuits (lighting, general sockets)
  • Type A: detects alternating and pulsed direct leakage currents. Mandatory for specialist circuits (washing machines, hobs, EV chargers)
  • Type F (or Hi/Si): enhanced protection for sensitive equipment (freezers, computer equipment)

What NFC 15-100 requires

  • A minimum of 2 × 30 mA RCDs per property
  • At least 1 type A for specialist circuits
  • A maximum of 8 circuits per RCD
  • Rating matched to the main circuit breaker (40 A or 63 A)

Our intervention

  1. Inspection of the existing RCD protection
  2. Determination of the number and type of RCDs required
  3. Compliant installation in accordance with NFC 15-100
  4. Balanced distribution of circuits across each RCD
  5. Trip test and verification of correct operation

Maintenance and prevention

  • Press the test button on each RCD once a month
  • If the RCD trips frequently, have the leakage current traced
  • Never bypass an RCD, even temporarily

Témoignage client

Our RCD kept tripping. Elecprium identified an insulation fault on the bathroom circuit and installed an additional type A RCD. No more nuisance tripping.
